A BOOK PRESS KIT HARMONIZED WITH YOUR BOOK

A book press kit is a package containing information about a particular author and his or her book. Each press kit varies in content materials, complexity and appearance.

You don’t need to have an all-out press kit. However most authors will have basic information about themselves and their book – ‘your bio’ containing your 'contact info' and ‘book info’ for someone to be able to find your book. This comes in handy because even though you may have a website with all info available, not everyone you meet will remember to look onto your website, forget, or may not find the time. Having printed information on-hand will assure info is remembered. And always carry 'business cards' with you for networking.

Below are some components that a press kit may have. Remember not to overwhelm your book press kit. Someone who’s very busy will not have the time to go through it. Make sure it’s straight forward, organized and compact as possible. Someone who looks over a brief professional document will get more out of it then having huge amounts of info crammed into it for someone who’s busy.

PUBLISHER LOGO DESIGN:

If you’re a publisher; a professional looking publishing logo design that you’re proud is important. Remember: your publisher logo should be designed to fit comfortably on a book spine, and should also be designed to conform as a black and white so that it can also be printed in your interior book title page.

A PRESS KIT MAY INCLUDE

If you don’t see something that you’re looking for, Just Ask.

Author Business Card for Networking:

Containing contact information.

Postcard:

The most typical promotional author postcard is having the book cover on one side, and information regarding the book on the other side.

Bookmarker:

Bookmarkers are effective in spreading word-of-mouth. One side generally is the book cover, on the other side information on were the book can be found along with info about the author (such as a website address).

Book Cover Print ‘Run-On’:

A “Run-On’ means an increase in print quantity. When your book cover is being printed, you can specify with your printer a certain amount of extra prints. This must be done at the initiation of the main print run and is worked into your quote. With those extra prints additional information can be printed on the reverse side (also worked into your quote). Additional information can be a sample excerpt, table of contents, invitation to a seminar/book launch/etc., chapter overviews, illustrations or photos, contact information. Having an original printed book cover included into your press kit can be effective.

A ‘Label’ for your Presentation folder/Pocket Folder:

A presentation folder is a great way to organize your press kit. Custom printing on presentation folders is very expensive and not practical since it will drain your budget. But printing a full colour label that you can stick onto the cover of a presentation folder is very cost effective and can look great.

TESTIMONIALS

Hi David,

Everything looks BEAUTIFUL! I just can't tell you how happy I am with everything you've done for me. You've done an outstanding job on every facet of my book and the coordinating materials that go along with it. I like the whole concept, the cover, interior design (it's my favorite!), the bookmarkers, the postcards, the note cards, they're all wonderful and I think they all complement each other perfectly. I know how very hard you've worked on my project and I'm so appreciative of your patience and extra effort. This has been a wonderful experience for me. I'm looking forward to working on additional things with you as this venture progresses.

Thanks again.

Regards,

Pat
