DO BOOK ORNAMENTS PLAY AN IMPORTANT PART IN BOOK DESIGN?

Book ornaments can be described as a book designer tool to further connect a book’s body composition together and enhance the reading experience for the reader. An ornament shouldn’t distract from the content, but rather be an influential silent partner in the background and when noticed should be pleasant to look at.

Ornaments can also provide a characteristic feel to a book.

Ornaments are very specific and embellish the book’s meaning. A floral ornament would enhance a gardening book but would be a distraction in a book about icebergs.

PERSONALIZED BOOK ORNAMENTS THAT I'VE DESIGNED

When I’m designing interior book pages involving a complex book such as a Memoir, I’ll always ask the author if he or she would like me to design custom personalized ornaments specific to their book's subject. Ornaments can play-the-part within chapter headings, text breaks, page numbers and bullet points. The ornament is designed according to each of those roles.

Since each ornament has its own unique design, the ones included with fonts may not always provide a theme that can be applied to all of those roles. Therefore a personalized group of ornaments can be designed as a group to provide that unified feeling found in book designs.
